Come on, let's begin. He is a professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, where he has taught since 1. They were driving at night because they had been slow starting and had been further delayed having to get a new tire along the way. It was Helen's idea, when they got back into the car after dinner, somewhere in eastern Ohio: 'Let's not look for a motel,' she said, 'let's drive all night.' . But not much farther along the Interstate, they come up behind a car that forces them to slow down. What follows is told from the view of Tony, who is a somewhat abstracted math professor and not effective in a crisis. Somehow what happens seems partly his fault.
He bumps into the other car and blows a tire. When he pulls over, the other car stops too. Half sinisterly and half playfully, their leader berates Tony for the accident and orders his companions to change the flat tire.
But Tony will drive their car with one of the men, while the other two will go in Tony's car with Laura and Helen. Tony follows with the remaining man but loses sight of his own car. He drives for miles until they are deep in woods. At dawn he stops at a farmhouse and calls the state police. Later the police telephone to say they have found his car in a river but there is no sign of his wife and daughter. He had better retrace his night's route with them.
When they drive into a clearing near where Tony was dropped off the night before, one of the policemen cries out. Tony gets out of the car and sees the naked bodies lying under a bush. Wright's novel continues. What she thought she couldn't bear. She feels stunned with Tony as if she had not seen it coming.
A terrible sad crime, though she believes that if they had not died having come this far she would have been disappointed. Poor Tony, how much her pleasure depends on his distress. She has a notion that the pain the scene uncovers, incarnated in Tony, is really her own, which is alarming.
But this review will reveal no more of either what happens to Tony Hastings or what Susan Morrow discovers about herself in reading about him. Edward's thriller maintains its momentum throughout, except for a slight brush with incredibility near its ending, where the author seems to let the theory of his story undermine its authenticity. Still, it remains a harrowing exploration of the border between civilization and barbarity, between justice and revenge. Perhaps a reader is a writer.
But is reading really such a superior activity? Her children spend hours on pop culture. Wright's latest work, you understand why reading beats anything.
